Introducing time-sensitive coupons designed to create urgency and drive order placement across three distinct user cohorts.

What are we solving?

What are we solving?

We had three user cohorts slipping through the cracks: new users not placing their first order, dormant users who had stopped opening the app, and existing users who were abandoning their cart. The common thread across all three was a lack of urgency. There was nothing compelling enough to make them shop now rather than later.

How did we solve it?

How did we solve it?

Time-limited coupons gave us that lever. A relevant offer with a deadline creates a reason to act immediately. By placing that coupon across multiple touchpoints in the user journey, we could target each user cohort, and build urgency to checkout.

The Process

The Process

1
Process
We started with competitive research to understand how others were solving this, which gave us the grounding to scope our own solution.
2
Journey Map
Once we confirmed we were working with coupons specifically, we mapped out the user journey for each cohort and defined where and how the offer should appear.
3
Design Exploration
The bulk of the exploration was around the timer itself: how it looked, how it behaved, and how it integrated with existing components. Then we worked out how it would look sprinkled across our existing journey.
4
Visual Design
After 2 reviews, we focused on the visual treatment of this feature. Given the urgency factor, the coupon needed to stand out visually, so we put effort into making it look distinct.
5
Handoff and Development
Development was lengthy, largely due to the animation challenges we encountered along the way. Design also had to be slightly modified to accomodate for this.

Creating a new DS component: Timer

Creating a new DS component: Timer

A new design system component meant it had to be functional and adaptable from the start. We built variations of the timer to cover the range we'd require to integrate it across our app.

Merging the timer with existing designs

We already had a coupon design that users were habituated to, so changing it wasn't an option. Integrating the timer into that existing pattern without breaking familiarity was a difficult design problem. The result does the job, but we'd be the first to say there's room to improve.

The urgency factor

The urgency factor

Adding a ticking timer across multiple touchpoints can feel aggressive fast. So we leaned into the visual design to make it feel delightful rather than demanding. We also couldn't auto-apply coupons, so the design had to do the work of making users notice and act quickly.

We built animations in Rive after seeing it used widely by other apps, but it bugged out our app experience while we were testing it out. Our development team integrated it, unintegrated it, and rebuilt everything in code. Not only was it a long detour, it also required more design changes.
